Poundworld, the discount chain of stores, has said it will create around 4,000 new full and part time retail jobs over the next three years.

The company, which is headquartered in Yorkshire, has an ambitious expansion plan which will see it open an average of 50 new stores a year, taking its number of outlets from just under 250 stores to levels approaching the 400 mark before the end of 2017.

With the average Poundworld store creating between 25 and 30 new retail jobs, the company predicts it will advertise over 4,000 vacancies in the next 36 months.

Speaking after announcing a turnover of £345 million and operating profits in excess of £6 million, Poundworld’s owner, Chris Edwards, said: “Approaching our 40th anniversary, we’re extremely pleased with the positive progress that Poundworld has made in the past financial year. It’s been a year of significant developments for the company, that will help us to meet the strong consumer appetite for our value goods and attractive single-priced proposition.”

As a result, we are in a strong position to build on the growth achieved, and fully expect profits for the coming year to comfortably exceed those announced today,” added Mr Edwards.

In the last financial year, Poundworld opened 32 new stores, but expects to increase its rate of growth in the next few years. The retail chain opened its latest store at Hinckley in Leicestershire just last week and has three more store openings at Edmonton Green, Chatham and Hemel Hempstead later this month. Between just those four stores the firm will have created over 100 new full and part time retail jobs for the local areas.
