16,000 Christmas Jobs At Sainsbury’s Supermarket

Sainsbury’s has become the latest retailer to announce a bumper crop of Christmas jobs for 2013, saying they will be looking to take on 16,000 temporary staff this year.

The announcement by the supermarket chain is particularly welcome considering that they are hiring over 3 times more staff for the holidays than the 5,000 temporary staff that joined Sainsbury’s in Christmas 2012.

Group Human Resources Director at Sainsbury’s, Angie Risley, said: “Christmas is the busiest time of year in our stores, so in order to give customers the best possible service we are boosting our teams with extra support. It’s also a great opportunity for people to join our thriving business and get some experience working for a busy retailer.”

Around 2,300 people who were hired for temporary roles at Sainsbury’s last Christmas went on to fill permanent jobs at the company during 2013. It is hoped that a similar number of permanent roles will be generated from the temporary Christmas recruits again this year.

Just one of the success stories from last Christmas at Sainsbury’s was student Emily Durham who took a temporary holiday job with the supermarket when she was 20 and still in education.

“I really enjoyed my part-time contract at Sainsbury’s over Christmas. It fitted around my studies but I also loved being busy in store, so when the opportunity came up for a permanent role I applied straight away.

Emily is now working at Sainsbury’s full time and has been put on their trainee manager scheme. Ms Durham encourages other students and young people to follow in her footsteps, saying that, “anyone thinking about applying for temporary work should see it as great experience and it could even lead to new opportunities.”

Towards the end of last month, Marks & Spencer announced that it would be looking to fill 12,000 Christmas jobs this year, and more retailers and supermarket chains are expected to announce more vacancies in the next few weeks.
