Car manufacturer Bentley, owned by Volkswagen, has announced investment plans of £800 million for the production of a new luxury model which will create up to 1,000 jobs in Crewe.

Rumours have surrounded the manufacture of the new Bentley, suggesting that the company might look to build the model at an existing facility in Bratislava, Slovakia. After lobbying by the government, however, Bentley have decided to manufacture the car in Crewe, thereby keeping the new jobs in the UK.

The 1,000 new Crewe jobs will be a mix of full time positions, part time jobs and apprenticeships and will take the total number of employees at their headquarters to around 5,000. In addition to creating new jobs, the new investment by Bentley will also secure hundreds of other jobs in the supply chain.

The latest luxury Bentley will be a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and is expected to have a price tag in the region of £150,000 when it goes on sale to markets worldwide in 2016. No image of what will be Bentley’s fourth model has yet been released by the company but they say it will be ultra luxurious, powerful, faithful to the Bentley design and that the ‘styling will set it apart from any other SUV on the road.’

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, welcomed the announcement, saying: “A thousand jobs for our country and another success for our automotive industry. I am delighted that Bentley will be building their new vehicle [in Crewe], not only creating a thousand jobs, but safeguarding many more, as well as increasing training opportunities for highly skilled apprentices.”

The car industry as a whole in the UK provides full and part time jobs for more than 700,000 people and, by churning out an average of three cars every minute, facilitates the manufacture of over 1.5 million vehicles a year.
