Ikea Expansion Could Create 1,000 UK Jobs

An expansion by Ikea could potentially create 1,000 new full or part time job opportunities in the United Kingdom, says the acting boss of the Swedish-born furniture firm in the UK and Ireland.

Ikea, most famous for its flat pack range of furniture but which has a product range of over 12,000 items, says it wants to find new locations for floor space in the UK. Planning consent has already been granted for a new Ikea at Reading, and a further planning application has been submitted by the firm for a new outlet in Sheffield.

Currently Ikea trades from four stores in London and has a further 14 bases around the United Kingdom but hopes to expand its UK network over the next few years.

Giving more details of the potential jobs that could open up elsewhere in the UK, acting manager for Ikea in UK and Ireland, Carole Reddish, said: “If and when we can open these stores, they will contribute significantly to their local economy and job markets, while making Ikea more accessible to consumers in west Berkshire and South Yorkshire.”
