Up to 12,000 new full or part time jobs are forecast to be created at the Costa Coffee and Premier Inn chains over the next five years.

The parent company of both brands, Whitbread, says it plans to accelerate the growth of Premier Inn and Costa Coffee and will need a boost in headcount numbers in order to carry out its expansion aims.

There are now over 50 thousand Premier Inn rooms, but Whitbread want to increase that figure by half as much again in the next five years. In the same time frame, it plans to increase the number of Costa Coffee shops from current levels of around 1,500 outlets and expects to double sales at the coffee chain to £2 billion.

The new hotel jobs and coffee shop positions at Premier Inn and Costa Coffee are expected to be advertised at locations all over the country and should consist of new full and part time opportunities at all levels of the companies.

Whitbread’s chairman, Anthony Habgood, said of his company’s solid performance: “Whitbread has grown its total sales in the year by over 14 per cent and continued to produce strong operating cash flows of over £500 million. With the Premier Inn and Costa brand propositions going from strength to strength, this growth is set to continue.”

Whitbread, which also includes the Beefeater and Brewer’s Fayre restaurant brands, created around 3,000 new jobs last year and made pre-tax profits of over £350 million.

Chief executive of Whitbread, Andy Harrison, said the group as a whole was creating “quality jobs” for people in the United Kingdom.
