Expanded Retail Park Could Bring 550 Jobs To Wales

Expanded Retail Park Could Bring 550 Jobs To Wales A plan to expand the Cyfarthfa Retail Park in Merthyr Tydfil could create up to 550 full or part time jobs in Wales according to potential developers Hammerson.

Around 250 permanent Welsh jobs could be created by early 2014 if the proposal gets the go ahead. A further 300 temporary jobs would be created in the construction stage of the project say the developers.

Currently, the retail park, which was completed in 2005 by Hammerson, consists of 18 stores and eateries but it is hoped that the expansion would bring new high profile names like Marks & Spencer to the area. The biggest outlet at the Cyfarthfa Retail Park at the moment is B&Q, but it is thought that they may move to a smaller site so that the £30 million expansion plans can go ahead.

Speaking about the proposed retail park recently, Paul Brown, a local councillor in Merthyr Tydfil said: “This has been on the agenda for the last 15 years. The people of Merthyr have been waiting a long time for this. This won't just mean jobs when it opens but construction jobs as well, which is going to be a massive boost.”
