1,800 Full Or Part Time Jobs At Poundworld

29 Aug 2011

1,800 Full Or Part Time Jobs At Poundworld Up to 1,800 full or part time jobs could be created as discount store Poundworld attempts to fill the void left by the closure of Woolworths’ shops.

Poundworld, an outlet which sells a variety of products for - yes, you guessed it, £1 or less – has announced plans to expand its Discount UK brand of shops throughout Britain.

There are currently just 13 Discount UK stores in the Poundworld portfolio but they plan to more than double that figure by opening a further 15 outlets. In addition, in the next year, the chain will also open a further 40 of their flagship pound shops to add to the 120 outlets that they currently trade from.

The expansion plans will create up to 1,800 full or part time vacancies and take Poundworld’s headcount in the UK to close to 5,000 employees.

Chris Edwards, founder of Discount UK and the chain’s buying director, explained the logic behind the expansion plans: “Woolworths offered variety and value and when it closed we felt we could step into its shoes with a modern multi-price format. Consumer demand for value in the current economic climate is continuing to benefit us. While a lot of retailers are struggling in the current market, for us it is presenting unrivalled opportunities in terms of both customer profiles and store availability.”
