HMV, the music and entertainment retailer, is heading off on a bit of a Christmas expansion plan which will certainly result in more local Christmas HMV jobs on the high street.

This year, they will be opening 18 temporary Christmas outlets (or ‘pop-up shops’ in current parlance) and all staff will be supervised by staff who are already old-hands at HMV. The shops will take up an average of 2,000 square feet and will target customers with exactly the sort of products that are popular at Christmas time.

The new HMV Christmas shops will start trading at the beginning of next month and will offer full or part time retail jobs around the country throughout the Christmas holidays.

Each of the 18 stores could open up as many as 15 holiday jobs for the festive break meaning that HMV will be creating over 250 Christmas jobs this winter. If the new stores prove successful then HMV would even consider making them into permanent fixtures in the new locations. For the Christmas season last year, HMV opened 10 of these outlets and five of them stayed open.

Mark Bowles, Group Property Director at HMV said: “There are many more ways now to extend customer choice and cater to demand for entertainment products, and short-term stores and outlets can be a highly effective way of complementing our main retail offer and creating even greater added-value for consumers. To my mind they can play a highly valuable role - either in supporting existing HMV stores to respond to the massive surge in demand you get in the run up to Christmas or by extending a specialist entertainment selection to locations where traditionally there is none.”
