Aldi, one of the UK's leading supermarkets, is gearing up for the festive season by launching a recruitment drive to fill 3,500 new positions across its stores.
The news follows quickly after Sainsbury’s announced earlier this month that they are looking to fill 20,000 Christmas vacancies this year.
This 2024 hiring spree at Aldi aims to bolster staff numbers during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year for the German retailer and eclipses its seasonal recruitment drives over the last two years when the supermarket only boosted its ranks by 3,000 temps.
Some of the roles available at Aldi over the holidays in 2024 include store assistants, stock replenishment staff and cleaners.
The temporary seasonal positions offer competitive pay, with Aldi boasting the highest starting wage for store assistants in the UK at £12.40 per hour, and £13.65 for those working within the M25 area.
In a move that sets it apart from other supermarkets, Aldi is the only retailer in the UK to provide paid breaks, which can add over £900 to an employee's annual earnings. Also, Aldi will be closing its stores on Boxing Day, allowing employees to enjoy a well-deserved day off after the holiday rush.
The festive recruitment drive presents a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking for work during the holiday season or seeking a longer-term career in retail.
Launching the hunt for seasonal colleagues this year, Aldi UK’s director of recruitment, Kelly Stokes, said: “Our mission is to make affordable, high-quality food accessible to everyone and that is even more important at this time of year.”
“Our colleagues are essential to ensuring Aldi shoppers have a great experience in store, and we’re once again closing our stores on Boxing Day to give them a well-deserved break as a thank you for their dedication,” added Ms Stokes.
With plans to open 17 new stores before the end of the year, this recruitment drive is part of Aldi's ongoing expansion strategy. The supermarket currently operates over 1,000 stores and employs over 45,000 people across the UK.
