Ericsson To Create 800 Jobs In The UK With 5G Rollout

Ericsson, the Swedish telecommunications firm, has said it hopes to create around 800 new jobs in the UK with the rollout of its 5G network.

The 800 new vacancies will be created over the next two years, with 250 positions within Ericsson itself, along with a further 550 at the company’s 5G field and resource partners.

Ericsson is to install 5G to enhance capacity and coverage for the UK’s four biggest mobile networks: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone.

The Chinese company Huawei was originally supposed to be updating the UK network to the latest technology, but a change of mind by the government two months ago has led to Ericsson becoming the leading name in the 5G rollout across the nation.

Some of the 800 positions on offer at Ericsson and its partners will include graduate engineering roles and project management jobs as the Swedish firm pledges to improve more than 1 in 3 of mobile network sites across the UK.

Announcing the rollout of its infrastructure plans, the Chief Executive Officer of Ericsson UK & Ireland, John Griffin, said:

“Investment in 5G technology is fundamental to the future of the UK and as a global leader in 5G, we are putting in place all of our technology and expertise to deliver a cutting-edge telecommunications infrastructure that will support the growth of new jobs, kick start the UK economy and create a platform of unparalleled innovation.”

“With agreements in place to support a rapid 5G rollout for all four major UK mobile network operators, we are boosting our local delivery capabilities to support the UK’s ambitious connectivity targets and help prepare for a digital future that is full of exciting 5G opportunities for consumers and new industries,” added Mr Griffin.

Lord Gerry Grimstone, the Minister for Investment at the Department for International Trade, also commented, saying: “The UK’s highly skilled workforce and dedication to world-class innovation continues to make it one of the most attractive business environments for tech investors.”

“As our economy recovers from the impact of Covid-19, inward investment in cutting-edge technologies across the UK will help us to build back better nationwide, levelling up the UK. Today’s announcement demonstrates Ericsson’s commitment to excellence in 5G and I look forward to seeing their continued success,” added Baron Grimstone of Boscobel.

Matt Warman, the Digital Infrastructure minister, hailed the announcement from the telecoms firm, saying: “I welcome this investment in the UK by Ericsson which will create hundreds of skilled jobs across the country and accelerate the nationwide rollout of 5G.”
