Lidl Expansion Plans To Create 2,000 New Supermarket Jobs Across The UK
Lidl GB has announced plans to open more than 50 new stores across the UK over the next 12 months, creating close to 2,000 supermarket jobs as part of a major £600 million investment programme.
The German supermarket chain said the expansion will strengthen its presence across Great Britain and marks one of the most ambitious store opening programmes in the UK grocery sector this year.
New roles are expected across retail, warehouse, management and support functions as Lidl continues to grow its nationwide network.
Several locations are already lined up, with upcoming store openings including Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire and Thornbury in Gloucestershire. These new Lidl stores are all expected to open during the summer.
Lidl said the investment will also support British suppliers, with additional stores creating more shelf space and fresh opportunities for producers. The retailer currently says around two-thirds of its products are sourced from British suppliers.
Alongside new shops, Lidl is continuing to expand its logistics network to support future growth. Construction of a new warehouse in Leeds is progressing and is due to begin operations next year.
In London, the business has also submitted plans to extend and connect its Belvedere distribution facilities.
Lidl is actively searching for further sites across the UK, including freehold, leasehold and long leasehold properties, as it looks to continue its rapid expansion.
Launching their latest recruitment drive in the UK, Lidl’s Chief Executive Officer, Ryan McDonnell, said: “As we grow, we want to positively impact our British communities. We’re not just opening doors, we’re unlocking regional growth. Our expansion translates directly into high-quality jobs and gives British suppliers the certainty they need to invest in the future.”
“Above all, it advances our social purpose of making affordable, healthy food accessible to everyone,” added the CEO.
Kate Dearden, the UK’s Minister for Employment Rights & Consumer Protection, welcomed the announcement, saying: “This kind of investment is exactly what we want to see from big employers, creating thousands of good jobs that pay fair wages and boost the standard of living in communities across the country.”
“Lidl's expansion plans are a real vote of confidence in our plan to grow the economy, demonstrating that responsible business growth can bring significant benefits for both businesses and workers,” said Ms Dearden.
Lidl has grown significantly since launching in the UK in 1994. It now employs more than 35,000 people, operates over 1,000 stores and has 13 distribution centres across England, Scotland and Wales.
For jobseekers, the announcement could mean a wide range of new opportunities over the next few months - particularly for students, graduates and anyone looking for flexible retail work.
