IT staff 'fear for jobs'

22 Aug 2008

IT staff 'fear for jobs' IT graduates who are looking to embark on their careers during the current economic downturn could be interested to hear that fears are rising over job security in the sector, it is being claimed.

A recent survey by IT jobs firm InterQuest found IT contractors are increasingly more concerned about their jobs and career futures, it has been reported by channelweb.co.uk.

The poll found the number of workers worried about job security is four times more than the nine per cent in February.

According to the report, more than half (52 per cent) said IT was a more secure sector than others.

Gary Ashowrth, executive chairman of the firm, told the website no sector is immune from economic downturns but contractors should remain confident as IT will be one of the first areas to pick up again when the economy revives.

"IT is at the very heart of businesses – companies simply cannot survive without it and this survey demonstrates that IT professionals understand this point," he added.

Meanwhile, Halifax last week revealed its new research found that almost half (48 per cent) of students turn to part-time employment in order to support their studies at university
