TUC blasts new govt H&S report Students working part-time jobs to support their studies could be interested to hear the government's new report on improving health and safety in the workplace falls short, according to one union.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has expressed its disappointment with the conclusions of the Department for Business' Improving Outcomes from Health and Safety report released today (August 6th).

Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, said the report fails to address the "appalling" health and safety record of Britain's small businesses.

"Rather than address this problem, many have simply ignored it. More than half of small businesses have not even done a basic risk assessment, despite this being a legal requirement," he added.

The aim of regulation is to protect workers from injury and ill-health and obeying the law is not a "burden" but a legal duty, he concluded.

In other news, Sustrans Active Travel is urging students and part-time workers to adopt a healthier lifestyle by choosing to cycle or walk to work.

According to the healthy lifestyle organisation, 71 per cent of the 25 million people who travel to work do so by car.
