German supermarket chain Lidl is set to expand its presence in the UK by opening ten new stores before Christmas, creating approximately 400 new full or part time jobs in the process.
The expansion is part of the supermarket's ongoing strategy to increase accessibility to affordable groceries across the country, particularly in key locations such as Hoxton, Forest Gate and Caterham in London, as well as sites in Bristol, Devon and Birmingham.
In addition to the 10 new store openings, Lidl will also be reopening three existing stores that have undergone relocation or refurbishment: Chessington, Connah’s Quay and Dagenham Heathway.
Announcing the expansion plans, Richard Taylor, the Chief Development Officer for Lidl GB, said: “Our plan to open 10 new stores before Christmas demonstrates our continued commitment to providing more communities across the country with access to affordable, quality food, as well as employment opportunities.”
“But we still have big ambitions for our expansion plans to open hundreds more Lidl stores in the future. Our teams are constantly scouring the country for new sites, identifying opportunities not just in towns where we don’t currently have stores but also in areas where existing stores are experiencing increasing demand.”
Lidl has recently announced a significant increase in pay for its employees. Hourly wages for workers outside London will rise to a minimum of £12.40, while those within the M25 will see their pay increase to £13.65.
The supermarket chain aims to attract and retain talent by offering industry-leading pay alongside various employee benefits such as enhanced holiday entitlement and life assurance.
Commenting on the company’s rates of pay and other benefits, Lidl’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Stephanie Rogers, said: “The critical role that our colleagues play in driving our growth is always front of mind for us, which is why we’re committed to offering extremely competitive pay alongside a raft of other benefits.”
“We want to continue to support and strengthen the teams that run our stores and warehouses every day, whilst attracting the best new talent. This latest investment helps us to do just that,” added Ms Rogers.
Lidl GB’s Chief Executive Officer, Ryan McDonnell, also commented on pay increases at the supermarket chain, saying: “As we continue to expand we are welcoming more customers and attracting more colleagues into the business every day. It’s absolutely right, therefore, that we continue to offer industry-leading pay.”
With over 960 stores currently operating and employing more than 34,000 people nationwide, Lidl is poised to become an increasingly significant player in the UK grocery market.
As the supermarket chain continues its ambitious expansion plans, targeting a total of 1,100 stores by 2025, students and other jobseekers across the UK should be able to find part time work at Lidl within each reach of their homes.
