Amazon Planning 2,000 New Full Or Part Time Jobs In The North East

Amazon UK has announced plans to create up to 2,000 new full or part time jobs in the North East of England.

The jobs will be based at the online retailer’s new Stockton-on-Tees facility at Wynyard Park which is set to open this autumn.

The 3-storey fulfilment centre should open in October at a cost of £450 million and will add more than 40,000 square metres of floor space to Amazon UK’s warehousing operations.

All vacancies will be permanent contracts and roles on offer at the new North East base will include pickers, packers, finance jobs, health and safety positions and IT vacancies.

Amazon already employs around 4,000 staff in the North East but the new fulfilment centre will increase their headcount in the region by a further 50 per cent to approximately 6,000 members of staff.

Announcing the new recruitment plans, Regional Director for Amazon UK in the North East, Marianna Desai, said: “I am delighted to announce Amazon’s continued investment in the North East of England with the opening of a new fulfilment centre in Stockton-on-Tees, creating 2,000 new permanent jobs.”

“I look forward to recruiting talented individuals in a diverse range of roles - from engineers and IT professionals through to the teams who will handle customer orders,” added Ms Desai.

Councillor Bob Cook, the Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, welcomed the news, saying:

“We are delighted to support Amazon’s announcement of the forthcoming opening of a new state-of-the-art robotics fulfilment centre in Stockton-on-Tees. This will add 2,000 new permanent roles to the Borough and builds on the significant investment made by Amazon into the region to date.”

The Member of Parliament for Stockton North, also commented, saying: “Amazon’s announcement is very welcome news for our area as it will see high quality jobs and substantial investment brought to Stockton-on-Tees.”

“I was impressed by the modern state-of-the-art robotics building which I visited earlier this year and I’m looking forward to seeing the site fully open and operational this Autumn, creating 2,000 new permanent local jobs and adding to Amazon’s already significant investment in the North East,” said the MP.

Finally, the MP for Stockton South, Matt Vickers, added, “I’m thrilled by the news that Amazon has chosen Stockton for this state-of-the-art facility, which will bring another 2000 skilled job opportunities to our local workforce.”

“Figures released by the ONS last month showed that the North East has seen the largest increase in employment rate. Amazon's welcome decision is another example of how Stockton has become an attractive place to invest.”

Highlighting some of the benefits of working for Amazon UK, the company’s press release says:

“Like all fulfilment centres in the UK, employees caring for school-age children - including parents, guardians and grandparents - will also be able to apply for term-time working. Amazon’s innovative new contract guarantees time off during the six-week Summer break, as well as each two-week holiday period at Easter and Christmas.”
