German supermarket chain Aldi has announced huge expansion plans which will see the retailer create around 2,400 new full or part time supermarket jobs in London.

Aldi is hoping to double its supermarket portfolio in and around London in a move which could create an average of around 40 new vacancies at each store in the capital and the wider M25 belt.

The discount supermarket chain currently has around 60 stores in London but has ambitions to increase their outlets to up to 120 in the next few years.

One barrier to entry for Aldi in London is the fact that their flagship stores take up 120,000 square feet - and there are a dwindling number of suitable locations of such size in the region.

Incidentally, the 2,400 London jobs just announced are in addition to the 6,000 new UK-wide vacancies which Aldi announced a couple of weeks ago.

Commenting on the expansion plans in the UK capital, Aldi’s regional managing director for London, Ben Shotter, said: “We strongly believe that access to affordable, high-quality food is a right, not a privilege. But we’re conscious that there are still many areas, particularly in the capital and within the M25, that don’t have access to an Aldi.”

“As a result, too many people have to make do with big prices at the big supermarkets. We want to give more people a new Aldi store with our award-winning products at unbeatable prices. We are looking for locations across the UK, but particularly in London,” added Mr Shotter.
