German supermarket chain Lidl is opening six new stores this month and will create around 250 new full and part time supermarket jobs in the process.
Earlier this week (20th January 2022) the retailer opened its 900th supermarket in the UK when doors opened at its latest store on Liverpool’s Edge Lane, close to the city centre, creating 40 vacancies in the Merseyside city.
Other stores opened throughout January include two new Lidl supermarkets in London, as well as three more in Wolverhampton, Newcastle and Shipley, West Yorkshire.
The new additions are edging Lidl closer to its goal of 1,100 supermarkets in the United Kingdom before the end of 2025.
They have already opened 50 new stores in the last twelve months and typically create an average of 40 to 50 jobs with each launch.
Commenting on the latest recruitment drive, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer for Lidl GB, Christian Härtnagel, handed on the baton to his successor, saying:
“As my time at Lidl GB comes to an end, I have been reflecting on our achievements over the past five years. Since my appointment in 2016, we have opened over 240 stores and seven distribution centres, creating thousands of new jobs for the UK economy.”
“The opening of our 900th store reiterates our ambitious plans and commitment to Great Britain, and we remain on track to open 1,100 stores by the end of 2025.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Lidl colleagues for their hard work and dedication, particularly given the challenging context of the past two years.”
“As our expansion continues at pace, we look forward to opening our doors to more communities up and down the country in the coming months and years and guaranteeing high quality at the lowest prices for even more families,” added Mr Härtnagel.
