Lidl To Create 1,500 Supermarket Jobs In Greater London

German chain Lidl has announced a new round of expansion in and around the capital, a move which will create around 1,500 new supermarket jobs in the Greater London area.

Lidl says it will open 40 new stores in Greater London, taking its tally in the region to around 128 and creating hundreds of new jobs in locations including Alperton, East Acton, Hackbridge, Watford and London’s zone 1.

The expansion plans will see the German discount retailer increase its portfolio of stores in Greater London by more than 40 per cent over the next five years.

Announcing the expansion plans in and around the capital, Christian Hartnagel, Aldi’s UK chief executive officer, said: “It's coming up to 25 years since we first launched in London, and in that time we've grown to almost 90 stores, employing more than 5,000 people. London is at the heart of our growth plans across Great Britain, and we are proud to be in a position where we're continuing to create new jobs.”

“Our £500million investment reflects the scale of opportunity we have to bring our quality produce to even more of the capital's communities, at prices that make it affordable to everyone,” added Mr Hartnagel.

Since launching in Britain in 1994, Lidl has grown to a chain of 760 stores throughout the UK and now employs over 22,000 people in full and part time roles nationwide.
