In an effort to improve its support functions, telecoms giant BT has announced it is creating over 1,000 new full or part time customer service jobs in the UK and Ireland.

Adding that they will no longer be offering contract roles, the permanent jobs will be within the BT Consumer division, which also added 1,100 new staff last year.

The new recruits will deal with technical issues, account queries and offer support to customers across all BT Consumer products.

The move is a further part of BT’s pledge to bring all customer service roles back to the United Kingdom and Ireland from abroad over the eighteen months.

One region set to benefit massively from the new BT jobs is the North East whose contact centres will host almost 1 in 6 of the new positions.

South Shields will have 80 of the BT vacancies, while Newcastle will have 70 jobs on offer and Middlesbrough will be looking to fill a further 50 customer service roles.

Commenting on the latest recruitment drive, BT’s Consumer Business Chief Executive Officer, Marc Allera, said: “We’re continuing to invest across the UK to give our customers the best connections, service and experiences.”

“These new roles will provide better job security, and will mean our people can focus on putting our customers first and offer the best help and support, whether on the phone or online,” added Mr Allera.
