JD Wetherspoon, the hugely popular chain of pubs, has expansion plans which will see it open 200 new bars over the next five years, creating a whacking 15,000 full and part time jobs in the hospitality trade.
Wetherspoons will open an average of 40 new pubs in the UK and Ireland over the next few years, at a cost of around £400 million, and will generate an average of around 75 new jobs with each opening. The ambitious expansion plans will see JD Wetherspoon generate a steady pipeline of around 3,000 jobs per year until 2020.
The thousands of new Wetherspoon’s jobs will be created at all levels - from pint pullers, kitchen staff, waiters and cleaners right up to managerial roles with the company.
By the time the latest round of expansion is complete, the chain should have over 1,100 pubs across most parts of the UK and Ireland, providing full and part time jobs for almost 50,000 people.
Founder and ongoing chairman of the Wetherspoon’s chain, Tim Martin, was eager to get things moving with the future expansion into new territories, saying: “We are proud to be creating so many new jobs and are looking forward to opening the new pubs, many of which will be in areas where Wetherspoon is not yet represented.”
Mr Martin also took the opportunity to mention how much the Wetherspoon chain generates in terms of tax for the UK government. In the last financial period, Wetherspoon pubs paid over £600 million in tax, a figure it forecasts will rise to around £1 billion by the time it adds the further 200 new pubs to its stable.
