Aldi To Till Up 35,000 New UK Supermarket Jobs

Aldi is to double the number of its UK stores before the end of 2022, a move which it says will create up to 35,000 new supermarket jobs across Britain - with many of them as entry level positions.

The German discount supermarket chain has currently over 7,000 supermarkets around the world, but plans to grow its presence in the United Kingdom to approximately 1,000 stores over the course of the next eight years at an investment cost of £600 million.

New Aldi jobs will be created at all levels; from entry level jobs, apprenticeships, distribution roles and shop floor positions, right through to graduate jobs and management roles.

Outlining their commitment to getting young people in Britain into work in the future, Aldi said: “This includes plans to create at least one apprenticeship position per store, per year, which would see the employment of between 600-1,000 apprentices each year as Aldi strives towards 1,000 stores. Apprentice training and development will be supported by a new Apprenticeship Academy located at Aldi's offices and distribution centre in Bolton, which is due to open in March 2015.”

To fulfil their ambitious expansion plans for the next eight years - and to try to improve on their share of the UK grocery market from a current 4.8% - Aldi will be opening between 50 and 70 new supermarkets each year, increasing their pace of growth from around 40 new outlets in the last twelve months.

Welcoming the announcement, Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Aldi's plans to create tens of thousands more jobs across the country are a vote of confidence in our long-term economic plan to back business, create more jobs and secure a brighter future for Britain. This news will mean more financial security for hardworking families and opportunities for young people who want to get on in life.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, also commented on the news, saying: “It is fantastic to see great success stories like Aldi creating jobs and increasing opportunities for young people.”
