18 Sep 2009

Tesco & Fortis Creating Over 1,500 New Jobs Supermarket Tesco and Fortis, the financial services company, have struck a deal which will create 1,500 full or part time jobs in the UK.

The 1,500 new jobs, which will be in the field of insurance, will be a 50 percent increase on the 3,000 people that Fortis already employs in the UK. The company have a head office in Eastleigh, Hampshire and bases in Bournemouth, Haywards Heath, Stoke-on-Trent, Gloucester, Reigate, Redditch, Belfast and London.

The deal will see Fortis providing household and motor insurance to the financial arm of Tesco’s business and they hope to become the second largest car insurance provider in the UK. Provisionally the partnership will run until 2015, during which time Fortis forecast they will insure just short of 3 million vehicles – increasing their customer base from 7 million to 8 and a half million in the process.

A new company, Tesco Insurance Ltd, is being set up to underwrite the insurance, with Fortis being the major 50.1 percent shareholder and Tesco Personal Finance owning the 49.9 percent balance.

The chief executive of Tesco Personal Finance, Benny Higgins, said: "This new partnership with Fortis will provide us with the flexibility to build on this success and grow the business further. I'm delighted that we will also create more than 1,500 new UK jobs."

Tesco is just the latest supermarket to announce new full and part time jobs in the UK. As we’ve reported recently, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s have also announced that they will create thousand of full and part time jobs in the next few months.
