A major UK-Saudi partnership is set to create over 1,000 new skilled jobs in Greater Manchester.
At the heart of the project is Graphene Innovation Manchester (GIM), which is launching the world’s first commercial production of graphene-enriched carbon fibre, in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s NEOM Giga-Project.
The announcement will be of particular interest to any students interested in graduate roles in science, engineering or sustainable technologies.
The initiative, recently unveiled by the UK Government, will see £250 million invested into a cutting-edge research and innovation hub focused on advanced materials and clean energy.
The project will be based in Greater Manchester, creating a hub for innovation and employment in the North of England and will focus on hydrogen technologies, including the development of hydrogen buses, trucks and production infrastructure.
Beyond the headline 1,000 jobs, the partnership is also generating opportunities in related sectors. For example, a collaboration between UK and Saudi companies will create jobs in the production of sustainable cement and concrete. Further investment in housing in Stockport will also create some commercial opportunities.
Announcing the development, Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, said: “Today’s agreements show how the UK is working with countries in the Gulf and elsewhere around the world to bring investment and jobs to Britain. Clean energy can be the source of the jobs of the future and these new investments and partnerships will deliver new jobs in new industries, boosting our country’s energy independence, and our economic growth.”
The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, also commented on the news, saying: “Every region and nation in the United Kingdom should feel the impact of our Plan for Change, which is why I am in the Gulf forging closer ties and strengthening relationships that support our growth mission in every corner of the country.”
“I am determined to ensure international diplomacy drives local results, whether that is discussing how we can support regeneration in the UK or supporting business deals that create jobs, my international agenda starts at home.”
“Further boosting the green energy relationship between the UK and Saudi Arabia, Oxford-based private equity fund HYCAP is supporting Saudi Arabia’s plans to reach net zero emissions by 2060 by investing £785m to develop hydrogen mobility clusters in Northern Ireland and across the UK, creating more than 1,000 jobs,” added the PM.
The news comes as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer looks to strengthen ties with the Gulf states.
This UK-Saudi collaboration presents a significant boost for the UK economy and offers exciting prospects for students looking to launch their careers in high-growth, future-focused industries.
