Tutoring work is great for students since it’s very flexible and pays well. It is also more than likely that you already have some sort of specialist area in a particular subject that someone else will pay money to be taught about.
It can be a language of which you have a good command - be that English or a foreign language - or you can tutor in many other disciplines such as law, science, geography or maths.
People look for tutors for all sorts of reasons - to boost their chances at exams such as the 11+, GCSE’s or A-Levels, to pass entry tests for universities, or simply to expand and improve their knowledge purely for the sake of learning something new. The number of teenagers having extra tuition at home has increased steadily over the last few years, particularly in London, so the tutoring job opportunities are definitely out there to be found.
If you have knowledge and you can impart it in an eloquent way, then you have the basic skills needed to be able to make good money as a tutor on a part time basis while you are studying yourself.
Traditionally, tutoring jobs have always been on a face to face basis. However, the rise of the internet has brought opportunities for students to work in purely online tutor jobs.
In this article, we will be concentrating on the more traditional form of offline tutoring where you will be in the same room as the person you are tutoring.
One of the great things about working as a tutor is that you can start young. There are typically no age restrictions and as the old saying goes, “if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.”
Another thing to note about tutoring work is that you don't necessarily need a teaching qualification or a degree to pick up some decent work. If you have decent GCSE grades then there is tutoring work available (usually with younger children aged 5-14).
That said, the more qualifications, knowledge and experience you have, the more opportunities you will be able to find, and the more money you will be able to earn.
If you are going to tutor anyone under 18 then you will also need to undergo a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

There are 3 types of tutoring job you can choose from:
Yes, it most definitely is. If you can find a private client to tutor then you should have no problem fixing up a schedule of one to one sessions which is convenient for both parties.
You can tutor in the evenings, at weekends or exclusively in the holidays so that the tutoring work does not interfere with your own education.
Even if you find a position with a professional tutoring company, they should still be able to arrange hours that fit around your lifestyle.
Obviously, if you are thinking about a long-term career as a teacher then tutoring will help you pick up some of the skills you will be using every day. The hands-on experience you can gain as a student tutor while still at college or university could be very valuable when you actually start applying for teaching positions.
Even if you don’t fancy a career as a teacher, then the skills you hone and develop as a tutor are very transferable to other spheres of work. Being able to explain ideas in a simple way so that people understand is a quality that is highly valued by almost every business in the world.
Tutoring jobs tends to pay very well on average. It obviously depends on how you find the tutoring work and how much money your student wants to spend on learning whatever it is that you can teach them.
Tutoring work, however, tends to pay relatively more than many other sorts of student jobs you can find at college or university. One hour sessions for highly-sought after disciplines can earn you upwards of £30. If you are still studying and get tutoring jobs through an agency then you will probably earn in the region of £10-£14 per hour.
Student tutoring jobs are a really well paid work option and can be done part time during term time around your studies, or over the holidays.
It is quite possible to find tutoring opportunities just by asking around college or university. Maybe your teachers, tutors or lecturers will know of some potential students for you to approach.
Likewise, ask your friends and family if they know of anyone looking for a tutor in the subject areas that you can teach.
Let students find you by registering a tutor profile on online tutor boards like Superprof.
Check the local newspapers and noticeboards in shops and other places where someone may have placed an advert requesting the services of a good tutor.
There are also a number of specialist companies which act as middlemen to match tutors with the right skills to the people who would like teaching. Also, there are some tutoring firms which recruit tutors on a permanent basis to teach their own clients.
A few companies that students might be able to find tutoring work with include:
