Job Description

The Launch Group are working with MBDA to support with gaining enthusiastic and passionate apprenticeships for their 2023 intake.System modelling is an indispensable tool used to ensure MBDA provides robust and reliable weapon systems to our customers. We build dynamic system performance models for MBDA products that are developed and used extensively throughout the product lifecycle from feasibility through to in service support. When used internally they allow our system designers to estimate performance which they can use to guide the product design. For our customer they provide a method of verifying system performance whilst reducing reliance on expensive testing and trials. Once the product is in service our models continue to be used by the customer to understand system capability and assist with operator training. The OpportunityModern weapon systems are made up of a large number of automated subsystems cleverly working together to make the overall product work. This provides a range of exciting challenges when developing accurate system level models as they are both large in scale and highly sophisticated with many interdependencies. As a model developer this means you will often encounter new and complicated problems which will require you to apply your intuition and innovation to solve both engineering and software challenges.Through the programme you will learn how to create simulation software in programming languages/environments such as MathWorks MATLAB, Simulink and Stateflow, FORTRAN and C and how to create software in a team using team collaboration tools. We also work closely with other departments and companies to integrate subsystem models and design data. From these interactions you will gain a broad understanding of each subsystem that makes up the weapon system and how the system architecture makes these subsystems work together to provide an overall capability.Programme StructureBy the end of this 4 year programme, you'll have achieved a BSc (Hons) in Digital and Technology Solutions Software Engineer at the University of Hertfordshire, through a blend of virtual and face to face learning. This will be completed via day release to university for one day of the week and the rest of your working week will be spent working in your placements. This is a rotational programme to allow our apprentices to experience various aspects of the function. Working within the various project modelling teams we'll teach you about creating, maintaining and optimising performance modelling software. You'll get to learn how to produce autocode and work with teams that make use of this software in embedded software and Hardware-in-the-Loop. There will also be the chance to produce analysis software that can aid users of modelling software to optimise what they are working on.Much of the work in this function is future focused and you'll get involved in research and development projects, helping to understand how the latest technologies and techniques can be employed to increase the efficiency of Simulation and Modelling within MBDA.Our Apprentices also get to have experiences outside of the department and see how modelling software is used and how subsystem models are built and supplied to Simulation and Modelling.Study on this apprenticeship will be a blend of virtual and face to face.Entry CriteriaThis role has specific qualification level and subject criteria - please make sure you carefully check your eligibility against this criteria as we cannot consider applications from anyone that does not meet the following requirements:5 x GCSES Grade 9 - 4To include Maths & English Language & Science / Technology Grade 9 – 4In addition to:120 UCAS points achieved through:Alevels - 3 x B's (or ABC) including MathsORBTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma minimum DDM in Maths, Science or Engineering subject (Engineering and Science applicants must provide evidence of completing Further Maths module)Why consider us?MBDA is an award winning company; committed to providing an inclusive working environment where our employees can be themselves and everyone has equal opportunity to reach their full potential.
