thoughtbot is looking for an apprentice designer to join our team. Apprenticeship is our position for people early in their career that provides structured support and mentorship to get you to the point where you are promoted to be a billable thoughtbot Designer. It is ideal for intermediate designers looking to build upon their already strong foundation.Since 2011 we have worked with well over 50 apprentices. Many members of our leadership team started at thoughtbot as apprentices. The majority of people who join us as an apprentice are already working as a developer or designer. We're looking for teammates who overlap with our clients' working hours. This position is available to in Europe, the Middle-East, and Africa (UTC-2 through UTC+3).SalarySalary and benefits vary by location and country. Read more about our Purpose and Values, and how we work in our Playbook.OverviewAs a thoughtbot apprentice, you will be paired with a thoughtbot mentor to set goals and grow your skills. You will build upon your existing experience as a designer and strengthen your consulting skills while working alongside your mentor. You will rotate mentors monthly and gain exposure to a variety of client projects. Additionally, you will work on special projects designed to give you additional time and training towards the goals you set with your mentor. This combination of rotations and individual projects enhances the learning process by exposing you to new client projects and new people, while also allowing you to reapply what you've learned in a new context.The apprenticeship is a full-time paid position. We expect apprentices to be promoted to the Designer role after approximately 3 months. Salary for newly promoted Designers vary by location. The UK salary range for a newly promoted Designer is: £42,500-£47,500.RequirementsWe work hard to ensure that we only accept people that we believe will be successful as an apprentice and will be promoted to designer. The majority of people who join us as an apprentice already have a base level technical experience, and in many cases have already held a position working as a designer who codes.Designers are promoted from an apprenticeship when they are very comfortable building and shipping User Interface design and front-end code.We find that well-qualified designer apprentices will:Demonstrate an understanding of user interface or product design including layout, typography, visual hierarchy, and accessibility in web and mobile interfacesHave an interest in and can code in HTML and CSSAdditionally, possess our desired character strengths: good communicator, demonstrates initiative, motivated, enthusiastic, focused, composed, curious, optimistic, displays grit, emotionally intelligent, and conveys gratitude.Well-qualified candidates value diversity, equity, and inclusion, and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
