Job Description

The Pathways into Development Graduate Programme is a year-long, paid internship directed at young Black professionals who are seeking to enter the International Development sector. The internship stands as a professional training opportunity where the successful candidate will gain the knowledge and experience to establish a solid foundation for career in the sector.Read on to find out what you will need to succeed in this position, including skills, qualifications, and experience. Position: Intern Location: UK office (Sidcup). As Development Pathways (DP) is undergoing a gradual return from remote working, staff are entering the office on a rota basis (approximately two days per week). Duration of Internship: Full-time for 12 months  Internship Allowance: £23,000 gross per annum plus benefits (listed below)   Purpose As a global International Development organisation, we at Development Pathways recognise that there is a lack of diversity, specifically in regard to Black professionals, working in our industry. We believe that in order to address this, we must have a diverse pipeline. As a means of beginning to address the lack of diversity within the International Development sector, we are launching our second graduate programme. The purpose of this internship is to work towards having Black practitioners fully represented at all levels in our sector. It is to provide recent graduates who are seeking to establish a career in International Development with the much-needed support, professional development opportunities and a network of experienced contacts. Programme structure The purpose of the role is to provide varied learning opportunities: both formal professional development experiences, and informal but valuable work experience. Throughout the year, you will work alongside and learn from a team of international development practitioners with extensive experience in social protection, social development, gender and social inclusion, and livelihoods across Asia and the Pacific, Africa and the Middle East. You will learn from practical experience through engagement in both technical and operational roles within the company. Some specific areas for skill development include: Research Policy analysis Political economy analysis Report writing Statistical data analysis Project initiation, implementation and closure Client and consultant management Budget management Project logistics management Digital communications Graphic design for digital platforms Proposal writing You will have the opportunity to attend both internal and external training courses, workshops, and technical learnings sessions on a range of topics, from “How to write an effective news article” to “The role of shock-responsive social protection amid the COVID-19 crisis”. You will also have the opportunity to build networks with and learn from colleagues across our technical teams (Social Policy, Socio-Economic Analysis and Management Information Systems) and in our other locations, including Kenya, Australia and Jordan. During this time, you will support Development Pathways by engaging in various tasks that will broaden your understanding of our position within the international development sector: from drafting policy briefs to providing Excel support, partnerships scoping, reviewing client contracts or writing news articles. There may be also opportunities to work on specific themes within social policy, including gender justice, disability, climate, and humanitarian emergency assistance. Person specification Essential: Black professional – must have graduated from university (undergraduate or masters) within 3 years of applying A university degree in a relevant area such as: International Development, International Relations, Economics, Social Policy etc. Less than one year of relevant professional experience A demonstrated passion for international development and commitment to inclusive social justice Professional fluency in written and spoken English, and good written and verbal communication skills Analytical skills Excellent attention to detail Excellent organisational skills with the capacity both as a team and independently Outstanding time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure Be proactive, with a positive can-do attitude Desirable (but not essential): Familiarity with any of these themes: Gender justice Disability Climate Humanitarian emergency assistance and social protection cash transfers Please note that this position is open to those who have the right to reside and work in the UK. Benefits Development Pathways does not believe in ‘unpaid’ internships, since they can significantly disadvantage people who do not have access to personal wealth.
