  • Ensure the work is conducted safely and reliably, meeting quality, time and budget requirements

Why choose us?

The effects of climate change impact our lives every day - from the air we breathe, to the food we eat and the world we live in. At National Grid, we run and operate the UK's energy system, delivering power to every corner of the country. This means we play a central role in helping to solve the challenges facing our climate. It's why we're acting today to help build a cleaner, greener Britain.

We're investing in transformative engineering and cutting-edge technology to help the country hit its net zero carbon target by 2050. But to achieve this goal we need the right people. We need people with passion and potential to help us win the race to halt climate change. For us, it is the job that can't wait.

What's in it for you:

You’ll learn whilst you earn through our award-winning higher apprenticeship programme, rated as one of the best in the country by previous apprentices and rated as a grade one (outstanding) by Ofsted.

You’ll gain a foundation degree, and once you’ve completed the programme, you will be able to register as an engineering technician (Eng Tech) with the Institution of Engineering & Technology!

What you'll get.

You will receive a starting salary of £24,355 and you will work towards a foundation degree. You will also have access to a number of additional benefits such as 25 days’ holiday, an excellent pension scheme and a number of flexible benefits such as a salary sacrifice car scheme. You’ll also benefit from full board accommodation whilst away at our training academy, which includes your accommodation, 3 meals per day, safety clothing and equipment, and travel expenses. Not to mention the earning potential once you’ve finished programme as well as a thoroughly rewarding career.

Our values.

National Grid’s ambition is to drive, develop and operate our business in a way that results in a more inclusive culture. We are committed to building a workforce which represents the communities we serve and a working environment in which each individual feels respected, fairly treated, valued and able to reach their full potential.

Location.

This role will require you to work peripatetically, which means that you will be working within a team with no base location and will be required to travel across multiple sites within the Sussex and Romney area. You may cover a large geographical area, as you will be working as part of a team that is responsible for a number of key sites within this area. On completion of your apprenticeship you'll be required to travel to these sites regularly. To respond to critical operations, you'll need to live within 45 minutes travel time of your area.

We’re looking for a diverse range of talents. We need the best of British ingenuity to help us address the climate challenge. We need people with creativity, energy, enthusiasm and skills from across every community to help us to do the job that can’t wait.

You’ll need to be safety conscious, eager to learn and capable of working to procedures.

Join us and we’ll help you to realise your potential.

Skills Required :

We can’t deliver on our net zero commitment without a generation of people with the technical expertise and skills to revolutionise green technology.

  • Communication skills

  • Interpersonal skills

Future Prospects :

You will be working towards a site-based engineering role within Electricity Transmission. The National Transmission System – which keeps our network running – is monitored and protected by an integrated control system, and you will train to become a specialist in looking after it. You’ll be ensuring that National Grid can meet its requirements for safety, efficiency and reliability so there is a requirement for a disciplined and responsible approach to work, following instructions and complying with stringent safety rules, policies and procedures as this role exists within an industry with a high level of safety critical activities. And don’t forget, you will need a head for heights as well as a good level of physical fitness. You’ll enjoy working outside but will be prepared for all weather conditions.
