Northamptonshire and surrounding area

£19,000 per annum, pro-rata (rising to £20,000 after mid-point assessment)

Initial 6-month contract starting March 2021

MOLA is one of the UK's leading archaeology companies, with over 300 employees across multiple offices. We work on some of the largest construction projects in the country where there are historical remains, which we professionally remove and record for the client developing the site.

We've got an exciting programme of work in 2021 so we are looking for trainees to join us and develop on-the-job skills and knowledge supported by dedicated trainers. You do not need to have any specific qualifications, but there will be a short test as part of the recruitment process to assess core skills including maths and English.

So, if you're interested in history, archaeology or construction and want to advance your career prospects by learning practical skills whilst gaining valuable work experience, then we want to hear from you. In addition, you should be:

  • Hardworking with a positive attitude
  • Keen to learn new skills (sometimes in a classroom environment)
  • Team player with good communication skills
  • Prepared to work outdoors, on active construction sites, in all types of weather
  • Committed to working 37.5-40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, usually 8 am-4 pm.

A valid UK driving licence is desirable, but not essential.

Your role:

You will be part of some of the UK's largest ever infrastructure projects, working alongside colleagues you'll use tools to dig different types of archaeology, as well collect soil samples, identify and collect different objects (artefacts) and describe, draw and photograph your work.

At the same time you will learn about the stages of an archaeological project, and how the industry works - developing and maintaining professional standards of work.

Future prospects:

Our training programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA). So at the end of the programme you will have the skills and experience needed to apply to join the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and work as a Field Archaeologist - MOLA hopes to offer as many people as possible a job upon completion. Career paths this scheme could introduce you to include:

  • Field archaeologist
  • Planning consultant
  • Archivist
  • Apprenticeship in archaeology or related field
  • Fieldwork specialist (e.g. recording historic buildings)
  • Construction roles where a knowledge of the industry is beneficial
