Job Description

Looking for a great start to your career in technology, earning and learning on a professionally accredited, award-winning scheme?  We are looking to recruit the experts of the future on our nationally recognised, award-winning Apprenticeship Programme.

Leonardo’s four-year Electrical Technical Apprenticeship provides a wealth of learning and development opportunities.  By the end of the scheme trainees will have completed a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering, a Level 3 Vocational Qualification as well as an HNC in Aeronautical Engineering.

The structure of the Apprenticeship programme will be as follows:

  • Year 1: Full time at Yeovil College with the possibility of working on-site in your placement at Leonardo Helicopters for 1 day a week post-Christmas.

  • During years 2, 3 & 4, apprentices will follow a structured placement programme designed to ensure broad practical experience is gained in the required competences.

Each Apprentice on this route will need to complete an End Point Assessment as defined in the Apprenticeship Standard, this will take place in the final months of the program.

Key Responsibilities:

Apprentices will work towards becoming a technician on completion of their apprenticeship.  Post-apprenticeship there are possibilities to progress through the grading structure and adopt additional responsibilities.

Throughout the apprenticeship, apprentices will be placed in some or all of the following departmental areas:

  1. Electrical Design: Apprentices will learn and carry out 3D design of electrical cabling/looming to meet the aircraft airframe specifications, design how Line Replacement Units (LRUs) will fit in to the aircraft airframe as well as designing the communications and databus looming.

  2. Continuous Improvement: Apprentices will learn and be expected to understand, evaluate and identify potential improvements within the business and look at the LEAN improvements that can be made in various departments.

  3. Manufacturing Engineering: Apprentices will work closely with the aircraft production line, producing the electrical work instructions for the manufacture of aircraft on the build lines. Apprentices will also create work instructions for electrical modifications to be fitted or changed on the build lines.

  4. Avionics: Apprentices will run the test schedules for the testing of aircraft LRUs, electrical systems and software on specific test beds. This ensures that all electrical and avionics systems run correctly before being fitted to the aircraft.

  5. Electrical Manufacturing Centre: Apprentices can be involved in the planning of loom manufacture, designing the form boards to manufacture the looms, manufacture of aircraft looms and continuity testing.

  6. Electro-magnetic Environmental Effects: Apprentices will gain an understanding and participate in the clearing of aircraft from an electro-magnetic capability perspective. They will prepare test schedules, define the testing and compile the outcomes in a report. Opportunities to use specialist test equipment on the aircraft to gain results.

  7. Customer Support and Training: Apprentices will gain knowledge of how Leonardo Helicopters supports the customer once the aircraft are in-service. This can range from carrying out amendments to electrical/avionic servicing and repair schedules for the customer, investigating customer queries and offering technical advice, to designing specific Ground Servicing Equipment to suit customer needs.
