Job Description

Plant Health & Seed Inspector Apprentices

Animal & Plant Health Agency (part of DEFRA)

This Apprenticeship will put you at the heart of one of Government’s most important challenges; safeguarding animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy. You’ll earn while you gain vital career-building skills – and work to protect life across the nation.

The Plant Health and Seed Inspectorate (PHSI) maintains and promotes better plant health. We exclude, eradicate and contain pests and disease through a range of activities – including a rigorous and effective inspecting team that enforces plant health legislation.

Vital work
Day-to-day, you’ll tackle all the duties of a qualified Inspector. You’ll work with the likes of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, UK Border Agency and the Port Health and Animal Health authorities to advise on and certify plant exports and carry out crop surveys – involve issuing Statutory Notices when necessary and imposing legal obligations. We’ll also ask you to help develop contingency plans that combat potential outbreaks of non-indigenous pests or diseases.

Valuable experience

The Apprenticeship is a Level 4, Regulatory Compliance Apprenticeship offered through a 24-month contract with the Inspectorate. (This is the academic equivalent of an HNC).

We’ll fund your training and promise that at least 20% of your paid hours will be spent on studying and developing your skills. And throughout, your Talent Coach and line manager will help you pick projects and duties that complement your studies and give you the chance to make your mark.

We can’t guarantee you a permanent role when you complete your Apprenticeship – but we expect most of our apprenticeships to go on to work either here, or elsewhere within DEFRA.

Rewarding benefits

Our rewards help you make the most of life in and out of work. In addition to flexi-time, there are 25 days’ leave (plus bank holidays), two generous pensions to choose from, and a number of performance and recognition awards.

To apply

We’re looking for ambitious characters and natural communicators. It’s also important you’re 16 or over, are legally allowed to work in the UK and have been a resident in the UK, EU or EA for the last three consecutive years.
