Job Description

The British Library is looking for enthusiastic individuals to undertake a customer service apprenticeship within one of the Library’s key areas. Customer service is varied within the library and you will be part of a cohort of apprentices in varying roles supporting members of the public or internal stakeholders in a variety of teams and functions.



You will have the opportunity later on in the recruitment process to select your preference of role. You could choose to be involved in the Visitor Experience Team or the Library Assistant team.



In the Visitor Experience role would see you working in a customer facing environment both at the information desk, answering queries and selling tickets and in Reader Registration checking identifications and printing reader passes.



In the Library Assistant team, you will be working in one of our St Pancras reading rooms to provide access to the collections both to Readers and other remote and internal users. You’ll also play a role in the maintenance both of storage areas and the collection by contributing to collection moves and preservation requirements.



In either role you will be working closely with your colleagues to complete tasks such as:




  • Dealing with queries from members of the public visiting the Library or using its online services

  • Communicating with customers using a variety of methods, including face to face, email and potentially via video conferencing

  • Provide administrative support to the team as required to help meet its’ objectives

Skills Required :

In order to access funding, we need to demonstrate an individual’s need to be in a position where they will acquire substantive new skills and knowledge.



Whist we will not exclude applicants from applying should they have significant experience and/or higher-level qualifications, we will need to assess the candidate’s ability to further build on these skills and experiences in an entry level apprenticeship.

Future Prospects :

At the end of your apprenticeship you will have gained a level 2 qualification in Customer Services. You will also have gained significant work experience in a busy customer services environment, having worked for the UK’s National Library.



At the end of your programme you will have the opportunity to apply for internal vacancies at The British Library.
