Job Description

While working for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service you will be working as a Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Technician and undertake your apprenticeship training with Paragon Skills. You will be continuously developing your knowledge and skills while learning all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair.



Your apprenticeship training will be split between a combination of workplace and academy learning on day release. Once a week, you will attend Paragon Skills Automotive Academy in Bournemouth where you will work towards completing your apprenticeship modules and demonstrate your practical abilities and competencies in our multi-functioning workshops. 



As a Heavy Vehicle Apprentice, your day to day duties will include, but are not limited to:




  • Assisting other technicians with vehicle maintenance, repairs and servicing

  • Assisting with keeping the workshop clean and tidy

  • Shadowing workplace mentor for a variety of tasks

  • Develop and build hand skills

  • Be responsible for equipment related to the role and course, such as stationary, PPE and technical equipment 

  • Keep an updated log and write up information in notes, messages, and documents relevant to work carried out on vehicles to inform colleagues

  • Working with a range of colleagues to widen experience and knowledge, as availability allows, to meet the demands of the service

  • To understand and adhere to all organisational policies and procedures.

  • Attend all learning and training commitments as required by WSFRS & Paragon Skills

Skills Required :

  • Literacy and numeracy skills in order to understand varied written instructions describing tasks, or take complex messages

  • Ability to meet deadlines and use some initiative in order to complete varied tasks or activities

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills in order to exchange varied information with a range of audiences

  • Ability to handle equipment with care and report any issues where appropriate

  • Ability to work as part of a team to provide a co-ordinated service to others
