Job Description

Tarmac, a CRH company, is the UK’s leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions business. Our innovate services and solutions help to deliver the infrastructure needed to grow the economy today and create a more sustainable built environment to support our future prosperity. Our unique combination of people, technology and assets enables us to collaborate with customers to offer unrivalled choice, innovation and flexibility.

For over 150 years our name has been synonymous with innovation. Inventions like porous asphalt and self-levelling concrete have helped shape the world we live in. Now we are helping to reshape it, with new solutions to overcome new challenges.

A career at Tarmac isn’t just a job, it’s a chance to shape the world we live in. Our apprenticeship programmes provide relevant, practical experience, first class learning and development, and outstanding support. Tailor-made for ambitious individuals who are determined to make their mark.

At Tarmac, we believe our people are our business. We offer an extensive range of career development opportunities and industry-leading rewards. By joining our team as a Mechanical or Electrical Apprentice you will be entitled to a competitive basic salary and a great range of benefits including:

  • Bonus scheme

  • 25 days holiday (plus statutory holidays)

  • Contributory pension scheme

  • Access to the Tarmac rewards website with discounts on retailers, holidays, etc.

  • Training and development opportunities

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for a number of Mechanical and Electrical apprentices to develop the skills to maintain equipment and assets in Quarries, Asphalt Plants, Concrete Plants, Blocks and Packed Product Plants as well as other industrial environments and respond to breakdowns and planned work. We will be looking for candidates who are interested in how things work, who like thinking things through and coming up with practical solutions.  As our ideal Apprentice you will need to be enthusiastic, well organised, and self-motivated.

What might my programme entail?

The apprentice development programme is an opportunity for the business to develop skills and knowledge for the future and to bring in fresh perspectives and ideas, at the same time enabling people to earn as they learn their trade and gain a recognised Level 3 qualification (equivalent to a BTEC).

The first year of the Apprentice programme will largely be spent studying the academic and practical elements of the role and the remaining years applying this learning on the job.

We will be looking for candidates with practical and technical aptitude and who can demonstrate an interest in science, engineering or technology and who are interested in a career in engineering. Equally importantly we will be looking for people whose attitudes and behaviours are in line with our Values. We need people who will always aim to exceed the expectations of their internal and external customers, who will take responsibility for achieving excellent results, will be open and honest and meet their commitments with a responsible approach to the environment and our communities and will consistently co-operate and work with others to achieve objectives.

Within your training and role at Tarmac as an electrical engineer you will have the opportunity to undertake the following:

  • Routine maintenance on plant machinery

  • Fault finding and diagnostics

  • Reactive maintenance

  • Developing new ways of improving works

  • Learning how to safely work in the engineering environment

Personal Qualities :

Candidates should be enthusiastic team members with a natural interest and aptitude for mechanical engineering.

Skills Required :

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to use your own initiative and a strong drive to succeed are all essential

  • Full colour vision is a legal requirement for all electrical staff onsite

Future Prospects :

  • Initially moving into the electrical maintenance team within the Tunstead Cement Plant or the wider Tarmac Group

  • Opportunities for progression, further development and specialisation with the maintenance field

  • Some previous apprentices now hold senior managerial positions within the team locally and within the wider Tarmac Group
