ABOUT SUMMER BOARDING COURSES

Summer Boarding Courses (SBC) is a premium residential summer school provider for international students aged between 8 and 17 years old.

Since 2009 SBC has welcomed Young Learners from 139 different countries to study our courses in three prestigious UK boarding schools, and more recently, Oxford and Cambridge University and Eton College.

SBC is committed to providing our students with an exceptional experience. We guarantee a truly multinational learning environment which encourages cross-cultural learning, collaboration and friendship. In 2019 alone, SBC was home to students from 101 unique nationalities.

In 2018, The British Council awarded SBC the maximum number of Strengths in the 15 areas it assesses. As a result, SBC became the first and only multicentre summer school provider to be awarded 15 out of 15 areas of strength in a full inspection, thereby confirming us as one of the foremost course providers in the UK.

SBC has an excellent annual staff returner rate – 88% of our 2019 Management Team having worked for us previously as Managers, Teachers, Activity Leaders, College Mentors and House Parents. This, as well as significant training for all staff, ensures that our staff and students are fully supported and empowered to create a positive and mutually beneficial environment.

THE ROLE
College Mentors are primarily responsible for delivering the Social & Wellbeing Programme & for the day-to-day pastoral care of our students. College Mentors need to be highly attentive & well organised in their approach to supervision of students throughout the programme & managing welfare issues. With students from a diverse range of countries & cultures, it is important that College Mentors have sufficient presence to bring everyone together & create a fun, welcoming & vibrant atmosphere in the College.

College Mentors are responsible to the Social Welfare Manager

Main Duties

• Assume responsibility for the welfare of all students

• Attend pre-course staff induction & complete a First Aid course (arranged by SBC) & act as a College First Aider

• Assist with welcoming arriving students & parents to the college

• Attend daily College Mentor meetings regarding pastoral issues, planning activities & excursion briefs

• Be on duty during all designated meal & break times ensuring appropriate standards of student behaviour & supervising student welfare at all times

• Oversee students moving throughout their day including key times at meals, wake-up / lights out, & break times

• Engage with the students in a friendly but professional manner at all times

• Be responsible for attending to unwell students & making arrangements with doctors when necessary

• Keep records of incidents, sickness & medical issues & inform the appropriate manager

• Oversee general room tidiness & report any maintenance issues to the College Principal

• Manage laundry operations within the College, assisting students using the weekly external laundry service

• Pro-actively address student behavioural issues remaining professional & empathic while dealing with discipline & behaviour management in a positive & constructive manner

• Help ensure that the students do not breach the rules of the school

• Assist at any time, whether on duty or not, with an emergency situation, or where a student is ill or injured

Social & Wellbeing Programme Duties

• Together with the Social Welfare Manager, take responsibility for the creation of the weekly Social & Wellbeing Programme, ensuring a varied & engaging programme activities & events

• Design, plan & deliver activities to groups of students within the Wellbeing Programme.

• Work alongside fellow College Mentors to plan & deliver structured & engaging whole college evening events.

• Lead students in the daily Programme sessions & on excursions, following pre- planned itineraries

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Essential

• Experience working with children in a professional capacity

• Experience of, & genuine enjoyment of working with children

• Strong communication skills, ability to work under pressure, flexibility

• Ability to take control of & lead a group of children on activities & during excursions

• Strong organisational skills

Desirable

• Experience of residential international summer schools

• Experience of working within the education sector

• Qualifications & experience in leading young people in either tennis, dance, performing arts, music or arts & crafts

• Experience & qualifications in coaching other sport

HOURS OF WORK
College Mentors are required to work intermittently through the day, beginning with wake-up duties, & finishing with lights-out. College Mentors will receive one full day off per week.

SBC PERSON SPECIFICATION
All members of staff employed by SBC will be expected to bring certain key qualities to the operation. There must be a professional interest in working with young people & particularly international children. Safety & welfare of the students is of paramount importance at SBC & a practical enforcing of this belief should be a quality exhibited by all staff.

Although College Mentor are not required to teach the English language lessons, we do expect them to be able to communicate effectively with our students, using an appropriate level of language to suit the group. College Mentor must demonstrate patience, empathy & an emotional awareness towards students both individually & in within a group setting. We expect College Mentor to take control of students & to manage discipline & behavioural issues in a firm, positive & constructive manner.

SHOULD YOU BE SUCCESSFUL

• Any gaps in your CV will be enquired about & must be explained satisfactorily

• You will provide the details of two recent & relevant referees who we will contact

• You will be required to undergo a Disclosure & Barring Service check (DBS), & equivalent if living outside the UK

• You will be asked to sign the Children’s Act 1989 declaration safeguarding the welfare of children, & state that you have no known reason why you cannot work with children

• Official identification & certificates (either originals or certified copies) will be required for our records
