Job Description

The role is to train up to become a fully qualified Chef, working alongside the experienced Chef's, learning all aspects of food prep and cooking and the running of the kitchen.



As well as working at the pickled postie there will be some outside events including weddings.



Duties will include:




  • Assist in the preparation and cooking of menu items as directed by the Business Owners

  • Make sure that recipes are followed properly during food preparation and cooking time

  • Assist with stock taking

  • Contribute towards the smooth and efficient running of the kitchen

  • Assist in checking food deliveries for both quantity and quality standards

  • Ensure stock is correctly rotated

  • Minimise food wastage

  • Maintain a “clean as you go” work ethic

  • Ensure food storage areas are correctly maintained

  • Correctly store leftover food

  • Ensure personal hygiene is always of a high standard

  • At all times adhere to the Food Standards Agency “Safer food, better business for caterers” publication


Personal Qualities :

  • Punctuality is an absolute essential, if a Chef can’t turn in for work on time the business will fail

  • The kitchen is a hard place to work. There are long hours, it is physically demanding, you are exposed to heat and high pressure - a Chef needs motivation to remain focused and consistently produce top quality food

  • It is only a flexible Chef who can ensure that the kitchen is running smoothly, pitching in wherever necessary, be it at the oven or the pot wash

  • The best Chefs are passionate about food and cooking. They have to genuinely enjoy the whole process of procuring, preparing, cooking and serving food



Skills Required :

  • Working on a variety of tasks at once and must do so while keeping the kitchen organised, creating routine and structure so that the environment is not chaotic

  • Excellent communication skills between the kitchen and front of house are essential in ensuring products are served to the customer in the manner in which they have been ordered

  • Cleanliness is a huge factor in maintaining standards and our reputation

  • Cooking is a science, so a Chef needs to be precise and attention to detail is the key

  • Every Chef has to be committed to quality, using only the freshest and best quality ingredients and the best techniques to produce tasty food of the highest grade

  • Our successful business is built upon a mutual trust and strong bonds that require team players who respect the views and opinions of others on the team



Future Prospects :

Development onto a Level 3 and/or full-time employment will be considered upon completion of this apprenticeship.
