Job Description

Sherborne School Group has an excellent opportunity for an energetic Senior Graduate Building Surveyor to join a busy and friendly estates team. Set within a historic landscape, the estate includes a wide range of academic, boarding, office, commercial, music, sports and residential properties, many of which are listed.

The ideal candidate will be degree educated in Building Surveying, will have a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience and must be able to deliver a range of traditional building surveying services, including stock condition surveys, reactive maintenance resolution, and Health and Safety management.

The post holder will plan, implement and deliver a range of refurbishment/renovation projects and will develop a comprehensive planned and preventative maintenance regime which aims to constantly improve/preserve the School's built environment. H/she will also support the team in the delivery of the School's ambitious £20M Capital Programme which is due to be completed in the next 4 to 5 years.

The post provides an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their existing experience, knowledge and skill base.

Key skills & experience:

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in several different disciplines throughout the role, some of the duties will include:

  • Project management, ensuring projects are completed on budget and to schedule;
  • Design & Contract administration (JCT and NEC);
  • Design, Specifying and CAD duties;
  • Prepare scheme designs with costings, programmes for completion of projects and specification of works;
  • Organise documents for tender and advise on appointing contractors, designers and procurement routes;
  • Determine the condition of existing buildings, identify and analyse defects, including proposals for repair;
  • Advise on energy efficiency, environmental impact and sustainable construction;
  • Instruct on the preservation/conservation of historic buildings;
  • Advise on the management and supervision of maintenance of buildings;
  • Deal with planning applications and advise on property legislation and building regulations;
  • Assess the requirements and design changes to buildings to meet the needs of people with disabilities;
  • Instruct on construction design and management regulations;
  • Deal with Landlord and Tenant matters as required and negotiate dilapidations (when there is a legal liability for a property's state of disrepair);
  • Carry out feasibility studies;
  • Advise on the health and safety aspects of buildings;
  • Advise on boundary and 'right to light' disputes and party wall procedures;
  • Prepare insurance assessments and claims;
  • Take responsibility for planning jobs, negotiating contractor prices, arranging quotations and producing costing;
  • Assist with the effective emergency call-out support relating to the Estates Department.
  • Communicate effectively with the Estates Bursar and wider Estates team on a day to day basis on all relevant matters;
  • Compliance with School Policies and Procedures;
  • Deliver an excellent level of customer service to internal and external customers;
