Each year we offer opportunities to undergraduate students to gain practical experience, working alongside technical experts at the forefront of scientific research. STFC consists of several distinct departments which each focus on a different specialism within science, technology, innovation and support, yet work together to achieve STFC's grand ambitions. Different departments may look for placement students with similar skills, so you should consider which role/s are most suitable to you, and apply for up to two of these.

The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is a world-leading research centre which generates beams of neutrons and muons to study the atomic-level properties of materials, from superconductors and soaps, to ancient swords and beetle wings. As a world-leading research facility, ISIS has a key role to play in engaging with the public and inspiring young people with science and engineering.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

We seek a public engagement student to play a full role in promoting ISIS science and engineering to a range of audiences, including school pupils and general public. You will join a team that plays a major role in the life of ISIS, promoting science and engineering through a range of channels including websites, specialist and national media, events, exhibitions and education activities.

You will have a have a passion for science and technology and will enjoy using and developing your presentation, organisational and creative skills to promote our science and engineering to a wide range of audiences through articles, education activities and events, including science fairs and festivals.

The role would suit someone studying for a science or engineering degree, interested in science communication and keen to engage with and inspire young people and the public. The candidate must be able to work well both individually and as part of a team, and be interested in a wide range of scientific areas and how science impacts on society.

Responsibilities

  • Researching and presenting our science and engineering through a range of channels, including events, activities and articles in education magazines, to a range of audiences
  • Developing outreach resources for scientists/engineers to take to science festivals and schools
  • Working with scientists and engineers to help deliver events
  • Supporting other ISIS communication team activities
