Job Description

As a Health and Safety Technical Apprentice, you will be part of the Health and Safety Team based in Stockport working amongst a team of advisors. You will study for an NVQ Level 3 Safety, Health and Environment Technician qualification, there will be ongoing learning opportunities to develop your knowledge further. We anticipate that once you have successfully completed apprenticeship, you will move forwards and become a Health and Safety Officer at Creative Support
You will work with many different teams across Creative Support to help services undertake work activities in a safe way. You will learn how to provide advice, report and record incidents, analyse data to help assess risk, carry out inspection and site visits and go out to our services around the UK.
You will assist to develop, review and check on the implementation of safe systems of work, develop and review risk assessments, investigate incidents and present findings to the management team. Under direction, you may be expected to perform analytical duties, such as carrying out environmental monitoring, and develop health and safety tools.
Sometimes you will work on your own to resolve queries, other times as part of a team. Over time, you will develop the skills and technical understanding to inspire co-workers to show how safety and health management can benefit services as well as protecting our staff and tenants. You will need the following qualities and skills:

  • You enjoy helping people and solving problems
  • You have excellent attention to detail
  • You have some knowledge of social care
  • You are confident using Microsoft Word, Excel and databases.
  • You display a professional and confident approach in dealing with people.
  • Good written communication skills
  • You will need to flexible and adaptable.
  • You're happy with travelling to different locations to do on-site inspections and visits
Once you are fully qualified, you will be expected to work closely with colleagues in our established Health and Safety Team, contribute to Creative Support's health and safety and risk management policies, procedures and systems. The main focus of your role will be to:
  • Conduct planned health and safety inspections and audits
  • Carry out responsive inspections and safety reviews
  • Undertake specific risk assessments and devise risk management plans
  • Produce written inspection and other reports on a timely basis
  • Contribute to health and safety related training
  • Provide practical and professional health and safety advice and assistance to staff at all levels
Whilst this is a generic, non-specialist health and safety role it is expected that the apprentice will develop a specific interest and competency in food safety/hygiene, gas/electrical safety, water safety, construction safety, management of asbestos or environmental health/management, for which additional specialist training will be provided.

This is a two-year apprenticeship rising to the role and scale of Health and Safety Officer upon successful competition of the apprenticeship.
