Job Description

Main Responsibilities: 




  • To deliver a high standard of learning, development and care for children aged 2-4 years old

  • To ensure that the nursery is a safe environment for children, staff and others

  • To developing partnerships with parents/carers to increase involvement in their child’s development

  • To be responsible for any tasks delegated by the Manager/Nursery Manager

  • To complete all academic aspects of the apprenticeship



Main activities:




  • To provide a safe, caring, stimulating educational environment, both indoors and outdoors, at all times

  • To deliver an appropriate play based Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum that enables children to make individual progress

  • To help ensure the preschool nursery meets Ofsted requirements at all times

  • To understand and work to preschool nursery policies and procedures, including how to deal with child protection issues appropriately and how to respond to incidents, accidents, complaints and emergencies

  • To plan activities which ensure each child is working towards the early learning outcomes

  • To be a key person

  • To ensure records are properly maintained, e.g. daily attendance register, accident and incident book, risk assessments

  • To liaise closely with parents/carers, informing them about the nursery and its curriculum, exchanging information about children’s progress and encouraging parents’ involvement

  • To work in partnership with senior management to update and review the self-evaluation and improvement plan

  • To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed, in accordance with the preschool aims and objectives



General: 




  • To undertake such other duties and responsibilities as determined from time to time by the nursery manager

  • At all times to act as an ambassador for the nursery and to maintain its good reputation

  • To undertake responsibility for specialist areas of nursery practice as required (e.g. health and safety, behaviour management, special needs co-ordination etc.)

  • Be jointly responsible with the nursery manager for your own training and development and attend training courses as required

  • To hold review meetings with parents/carers

  • To work closely and in partnership with the management and other early years practitioners in the team

  • Be aware of current nursery policies and procedures and work in a way that is consistent with them

  • Be aware of current health and safety regulations and work in a way that is consistent with the nursery’s health and safety policy

  • To promote and safeguard the welfare of children in line with the nursery’s safeguarding policy

  • To work in a way which encourages equal opportunities for children and adults in the nursery and to challenge any discriminatory practice in a positive way

  • To work in partnership with parents/carers and other family members and to ensure that their views are both solicited and brought to the attention of the nursery manager



Contacts and Relationships: 



Working relationships will include the following:




  • Internal

  • Director

  • All staff employed for the day care provision

  • Children

  • Parents and families



External: 




  • Colleagues from a wide range of other agencies and settings including Children’s Social Care, Primary Care Trust, NHS Trust, Early Years provision, and a range of voluntary and private sector organisations and other day care providers

  • Help to maintain good collaborative relationships with schools in the local area, plus other providers, and members of the local community

  • Working in partnership with parents and families is highly valued and early years’ practitioners must be approachable, friendly, and able to communicate effectively at all times

  • At all times, early years practitioners will be expected to respect the confidentiality of sensitive family information (subject to child protection policies and procedures)



Resources: 




  • Early years practitioners will assist in ensuring that the daycare provision is clean, safe and welcoming for families and staff



Work Environment.



(A) Work Demands:




  • Early years practitioners will need to demonstrate effective time keeping and time management to fulfil the planned needs of children and families

  • Early years practitioners will need to be attentive to children and families’ daily routines, whilst retaining the flexibility to be accessible and available to parents and carers, when required



(B)  Physical Demands: 




  • The work requires normal physical effort. It may occasionally involve lifting and handling of training equipment, play equipment and other resources and to be involved in practical activities and physical care of young children



(C) Working Conditions:




  • Early years practitioners are classroom based, but will be expected to attend meetings and training in other places

  • Qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills and personal qualities required

  • To be ready to start a level 2 or 3 qualification in Early Years Educator

  • A competent level of literacy and numeracy

  • Good communication skills

  • The ability to behave consistently in a caring and relaxed manner with the children

  • Warm and caring personality - friendly and approachable to families

  • The ability to form caring and trusting relationships with the children and their families

  • Commitment to the principle that families ‘know best’ about their own needs



Other Duties: 




  • To work closely with the other members of the team in the general care and maintenance of the nursery building and equipment

  • To prepare for and attend regular staff meetings and training sessions outside working hours

  • To attend annual occasions and events as required

  • To maintain a flexible approach to the work of the nursery in response to the needs of children and families

  • The duties and responsibilities in this job description are not restrictive and the post holder may be required to undertake any other duties which may be required from time to time. Any such duties should not, however, substantially change the general character of the post
