Job Description

IT Services is changing! We have an exciting opportunity for an ICT Apprentice Programmer to join us to help power the 'engine room' for the software development and corporate applications teams. As an Apprentice you will attend Barnsley College (one day a week) and undertake a Level 3 Software Development Technician qualification. The role is a fixed term contract until 03/09/2021. You'll also earn a salary of £3.90 per hour (or relevant national minimum wage for apprentices).

What you'll be doing as our ICT Apprentice Programmer

Technically skilled and adept, you will drive forward the #DigitalFirst programme to improve our customer and user access channels across the Council. You will also develop innovative solutions to present online services to a wide ranging audience.

About the Apprenticeship

We prioritise learning and enabling you to achieve your potential. So we've created a development process that lets you grow in the way that suits you - whether that's training to be a coder or learning flexibly online. That's one of the reasons why we achieved IIP Gold, and why you'll find your career here inspiring and rewarding.

This apprenticeship includes an individual learning plan with key learning and development milestones for you to achieve. You will be allocated a workplace mentor who will be responsible for offering advice, support and encouragement. They will also provide evaluation and challenge as well as help you to network with other Council colleagues, be an advocate and serve as a role model.

Some of the skills our ideal ICT Apprentice Programmer should possess:

- An interest in coding, software engineering or web development;

- Working with software, hardware and equipment;

- Logical ability to interpret customer requirements; and

- Problem solving, identifying an issue and resolving it.

To become our ICT Apprentice Programmer you must be willing to adapt and work independently but still be a critical part of the team and work closely with your colleagues.

You'll also need 4 GCSE's (A-C or 9-4) with Maths and English and IT or equivalent.

Here at Barnsley, we live and work by four important values: honesty, teamwork, excellent service and taking pride in what we do. As part of our team, you can be sure we'll do all that we can to support you in being truly excellent.

Closing date: Friday 16th August 2019
