Job Description

Are you looking to start a career in the leisure and sport industry? GLL are looking for enthusiastic individuals to work as apprentices on an exciting new project in Swindon called Generations Gains funded by Zurich Community Trust.



This is a 12-15 month apprenticeship; training will cover: Activity Leadership & coaching, Leisure Operations, Fitness Instructing, Partnership Working and Community Engagement including working with older people. You will have the opportunity to work at all seven Better Leisure Centres in Swindon.



This will be a varied role within the Swindon area and your main duties will include:




  • Working in community / sheltered housing / care homes / community centres as well as working at the Better Swindon Leisure Centres

  • Setting up and delivering physical activities and fitness classes for older adults in community settings and Better Gyms

  • Working with key partners such as Age UK, Public Health Swindon, Swindon Borough Council, NHS

  • Helping collate information for evaluation

  • Marketing GLL and Better Gyms

  • Preparing activity areas to include the safe setting up/dismantling of equipment and ensuring that all equipment is stored safely and securely when not in use

  • Monitoring and helping to maintain a safe and comfortable leisure centre environment by implementing organisational maintenance schedules

  • Ensuring the highest possible standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained by carrying out routine and other cleaning tasks when required

  • Assisting customers with enquires in a friendly and effective manner, proactively developing and maintaining high standards of customer care

  • Resolving customers’ problems, including situations where there is disagreement over the actions and outcomes involved

  • Working as part of a team to ensure the smooth operation of the facility

  • Following normal and Emergency Operating Procedures

  • Accurately filling in forms or reports relating to their normal duties

  • Taking occasional responsibility for the induction and development of new members of staff

  • Meeting the training and development requirements of the job role

  • Working within the job role description at this level, recognising the standards and professional limitations that this provides, referring to appropriate members of staff for guidance and support



A recreation assistant is responsible for the cleaning, preparation and general safety of areas in a sport and recreation facility. In ‘dry-side’ facilities there may be a greater emphasis on the setting up, taking down and storage of equipment. In both cases Recreation Assistants are the first point of contact with customers and will need strong communication and social skills.



Through work experience, coaching, training and development (both practical and vocational),  and from completing a structured learning programme to obtain work related qualifications, develop and demonstrate both an understanding of and capability to carry out the activities of a practising Leisure and Community Sports Assistant.

Personal Qualities :

To be considered for this role, you must be willing to work at the various Better Leisure Centres in Swindon and engage with a range of people over the life of the apprenticeship.



Skills Required :

  • The ability to deal with customers and their queries’ and concerns with tact and sensitivity as well as the ability to promote market & sell the service and centre

  • The ability to work as part of a team and deliver high quality service with minimal supervision in potentially pressurised situations 

  • The ability to control a group within coaching sessions

  • The ability to work in the community

  • The ability to work with partner organisations 

  • Good written and verbal communication skills and IT literate



Future Prospects :

There will be opportunity to progress onto a second year and a further apprenticeship to take additional qualifications e.g. National Pool Lifeguard, specific fitness modules etc. as well as the chance of permanent or paid position.
