Job Description


  • To develop, maintain and apply knowledge and understanding of pupils' general and specific learning needs

  • To provide care and supervision of pupils within the classroom, around the school and outside on the playground

  • To support the teaching and learning processes in the classroom, clarifying and explaining instructions and supporting individuals at an appropriate level

  • To ensure the promotion and reinforcement of pupils' social and emotional development, their self-esteem, appropriate levels of effort and behaviour and to guide pupils to become independent learners

  • To assist in the preparation, organisation and maintenance of a safe, secure and suitable learning environment

  • To assist in the preparation, and maintenance of equipment, including assistance with the creation of displays, make basic visual aids, art and craft materials, mount and display pupils' work

  • To attend and contribute to school staff meetings and in-service training with contracted hours or outside normal hours by agreement

  • To develop an understanding of and provide for pupils' specific personal needs.  This may include providing some direct personal care, support and assistance to the pupil in respect of toileting, eating and mobility

  • To maintain good order in dining areas by assisting pupils', where necessary, with the collection of food and return of trays, or other items to the service counter

  • Assisting pupils, where necessary, with the proper use of cutlery, drinking facilities or other aspects of the midday meal

  • Assisting in the clearance of any spillages and wiping down, clearing or resetting of tables, as appropriate

  • Assisting in the setting up and removal of furniture where necessary

  • A commitment to safeguarding all children and treating each individual with respect and dignity

  • Reliability, eagerness and patience

  • Empathy with pupils who have additional or special educational needs.  Where appropriate to be prepared to undertake special skills training e.g. signing, to meet additional educational and communication needs

  • A willingness to attend courses as required to enhance knowledge, understanding and skills to improve the level and quality of support given to pupils and teachers



Skills Required :

  • Experience of working with children in an education setting is desirable

  • The ability to communicate effectively with children of all ages

  • The ability to manage a work load

  • The ability to appreciate the importance of confidentiality and professionalism



Future Prospects :

  • For the right candidate there may be the opportunity to apply for a full time Teaching Assistant role upon successful completion of their apprenticeship
