Job Description

This is a 4 Year Apprenticeship of continued learning and development targeted to a specific technical expertise. Examples of target occupations listed below:-



Manufacturing/Engineering Support Technician



Manufacturing/Engineering Support technicians work as part of a team to provide technical support and expertise for all areas of the Manufacturing and Engineering functions.  Examples include:




  • Tool analysis

  • Measurement

  • Off line programming

  • Process control, performance and continuous improvement solutions

  • Capacity planning, production  scheduling/planning

  • Product technical applications and capability

  • Product development and innovation, quality control, inspection and technologies as required



Metrology Technician



Metrology operators check aircraft parts to ensure they are delivered correctly and to the highest standard.  They co-ordinate measuring machines and also verify and cure tools and mandrels used to manufacture aircraft components.  This requires a comprehensive skill set and an understanding of Quality instructions and Aircraft drawings, as well as being trained in highly accurate measuring equipment and software including Laser Trackers, Laser Scanners, Photogrammetry, traditional measuring equipment such as Micrometres



Quality Engineer - Technician



Aircraft parts have to be well designed and manufactured correctly – safety is paramount, there’s no hard shoulder at 30,000 feet!



The quality department’s role is to ensure that the highest quality standards are achieved throughout the organisation.  The role provides diverse experience in all aspects of aircraft design and manufacturing within GKN Filton and its supply chain, working with all levels of the organisation.  This may involve global business travel where necessary. 



Key skills required of a Quality Technician are:




  • Quality planning to make sure when we design and manufacture something, it meets the required standards

  • Use of quality tools and techniques to continuously improve our design and manufacturing capability

  • Developing our Quality Management System to deliver business process excellence

  • Dealing with GKN Filton customers on quality matters

  • Working with GKN Filton suppliers to ensure our quality requirements are met

  • Dealing with industry regulators (e.g.- Civil Aviation Authority) to ensure safety standards are maintained



Tooling Engineer - Technician




  • Tool Engineers use their skills to design / manufacture / modify and repair tooling that can be used to produce small and large aircraft parts and assemblies.

  • This requires a comprehensive skill set and an understanding of Quality Instructions, tool drawings and aircraft drawings and manufacture processes.  You will work closely with Design, Operations and Suppliers to achieve tooling deliverables.



Key skills being developed:




  • Understanding regulatory / customer requirements

  • Understanding of tool design and  manufacture

  • Composite and metallic material knowledge

  • Manufacturing engineering processes

  • CATIA based CAD design

  •  



Maintenance Technician 



Maintenance engineers carry out scheduled maintenance and breakdown repairs on complex machinery such as large CNC machining centres, chemical treatment plant and equipment.  Maintenance engineers need to have an analytical approach as they will be involved in breakdown problem solving and cross-functional communication.



A typical maintenance engineer, when fully trained, would be involved in the following




  • Machine diagnostics

  • Repair of CNC, conventional machines and treatments facilities

  • Scheduled maintenance of CNC, conventional machines and treatments facilities

  • Understanding of electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems

  • Responsible for the safe operation of plant during breakdown diagnosis and repair

  • An understanding of manufacturing processes and procedures



When fully qualified, maintenance engineers will be expected to work shift patterns to enable 24/7 manufacturing support. Health and Safety is the number one priority for GKN Aerospace and Maintenance Engineers are required to have an in-depth knowledge of all health and safety procedures.
