Job Description

R & V Walmsley in Cockerham near Garstang/ Lancaster are looking to recruit an Apprentice to assist on their dairy farm. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a keen interest in agriculture/farming.



The ideal candidate would be local to the area, keen to learn, hardworking, reliable & have some interest or experience in farming.



The role is varied but main duties would include:




  • Assisting the herdspeople in their daily role

  • Bedding

  • Feeding

  • Mucking out

  • Milking cows

  • Some tractor work

  • We milk three times a day starting at 4am and milking till 11 at night. The hours are split into shifts.  Hours will include early mornings and late starts but you will not be expected to work a late and then an early

  • You will work closely with other staff feeding, milking and caring for the dairy herd

  • On occasion you will get opportunity to use the tractors to scrape up and push the silage up when competent to do so

  • You will work with the vet and other external people who come onto the farm learning about all aspects of cow health and welfare

  • Other general farm work would also be included to meet business needs, such as repairing fences/hedges, maintaining machinery & repairing buildings



You will work 37.5 hours per week between 4 am (earliest start) and 11pm (latest finish), Monday to Friday with some occasional weekend work required. Times may vary depending on the season but this will be discussed at interview.



You will be paid £4.00 - £4.50 depending on experience and age. This will be reviewed throughout the programme and may increase depending on performance and progression.



Training will be provided in the workplace with Myerscough College & you will work towards an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Agriculture.
