Job Description

You will undertake a series of three-month rotational placements – covering Mechanical Assembly, Electromechanical Assembly, Electro Optic Assembly, Environmental Facility, Material Supply and Logistics, Master Production Scheduling and Industrial Engineering – identifying and resolving problems as they occur, within basic operating procedures. You will also learn how to build industry-leading infrared cameras and detector systems, and how to test these systems under multiple environmental stresses. You’ll experience how we manage the flow of material through our supply chain, and how we ensure the process is as efficient as possible.

The apprenticeship will also involve daily meetings on schedule adherence, load boards and visual KPIs, with an emphasis on you organising your own workload to ensure time is utilised effectively.

Later in the apprenticeship, you will provide coaching and guidance to junior team members and/or apprentices.

You will be working within world class facilities regardless of which site you are based. Dependent on your role, you may be working in an office or lab environment or a combination of both. There may also be opportunities to travel between the company’s UK sites to meet with colleagues, customers and suppliers.  Occasionally you may also travel abroad.

Key Responsibilities

Years 1 and 2:

Through rotational placements you will gather real work evidence such as written logs describing day-to-day tasks completed and highlighting the key engineering competencies you have demonstrated. The NVQ Level 3 will require you to complete a folder of this evidence, demonstrating your development into a well-rounded technician/engineer through on-the-job training. During this time you will also be attending college on day release to gain the academic qualifications required by the NVQ framework.

Year 3:

Having gained broad experience across Leonardo, you will undertake a final placement, with on-the-job training being more focused on a particular discipline. This will also provide you with the final pieces of evidence required to fully complete the NVQ.
