Pizza Express is a great hunting ground for students looking for work. With over 400 restaurants at locations all over the United Kingdom, there is a decent chance of one hiring staff not too far from where you live.

The Pizza Express chain started when Peter Boizot returned from a visit to Italy and opened the first restaurant in London during the mid 1960s. By the 1990s it was big enough to float on the London Stock Exchange and had a brief spell as a franchise operation. In 2007 it was bought back from the public by private equity business Cinven, part of the Gondola group, which remains the current owner of the Pizza Express business.

In addition to the hundreds of restaurants which Pizza Express has in the UK, the group also trades at 40 other locations around the world and includes other brands like Milano, Soho Pizzeria, Gourmet Pizzeria, Yard and The Wharf.

Both full and part time jobs are advertised at Pizza Express so you could find something you can do their while you are still at college or university. Likewise, you might be able to pin down some temporary work at Pizza Express during the summer, Christmas or Easter holidays.

Team roles include jobs for waiters, waitresses, chefs, pizzaolos, supervisors and cleaners. You don’t even need to be a fully trained chef to work in the kitchens at Pizza Express - if you have any sort of catering experience then they will train you up if they think you are the right person for the job.

Restaurant support roles are also available at Pizza Express, including positions in admin, marketing, finance, HR, IT and customer services.

For anyone interested in moving up through the ranks, there are also managerial positions on offer at Pizza Express. The hierarchy passes up the scale from Assistant Manager to Deputy Manager to Restaurant Manager to Operations Manager. Salaries for Pizza Express start out at around £20,000 but can reach over £50,000 if you make it to the top of tree and hit your targets.

For most roles at Pizza Express, you can expect a number of benefits like staff discount cards, food allowances, holidays and a pension scheme. Managers also enjoy a bonus scheme which accelerates as you move up through the company.

So, what do Pizza Express look for in their job applicants? Well, let’s hear it from the horse’s mouth - here’s what they say on their careers website:

“Whether it’s cracking a joke, recommending a favourite pizza topping, or entertaining a queue on an extra busy night, we’re looking for people with personality. People who are ready to express themselves – and take our success even further.”
