Company Details

The Danish retail chain Tiger Stores, or simply Tiger, has grown to a worldwide operation with more than 500 outlets and around 40 million customers. Tigers has stores in over 25 different countries with more than 50 branches in England alone. If you add in the rest of the UK and Ireland, then there are around 80 Tiger Stores where students might be able to find some full or part time retail work with the Danish firm.

Tiger Stores sell a variety of products, ranging from spices to kitchenware, from batteries to office products and from toys to make up to music. It’s quite an eclectic mix of goods that make up the typical Tiger store, but it’s a business model that certainly works, with the retailer posting profits of over £1.5 million on a turnover of almost £15 million in 2012.

The first Tiger store was opened in Copenhagen by Lennart and Suzanne Lajboschitz during 1995. After expanding within Denmark, Tiger branched out overseas and opened its first UK store at Basingstoke 10 years later in 2005. Fast forward another decade, and, by 2015, Tiger had reached the United States with a store in New York and had also opened up a large presence in many other countries including Germany, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Italy and Japan.

After opening that first store in Basingstoke, Tiger continued to expand around the UK and you can find out if there is a branch near you which might be advertising retail jobs by visiting the company’s store locator. Tiger Stores look set to continue expansion in the UK over the next few years, opening an average of around 6 or 7 new outlets every twelve months, all of which could have a full or part time job with your name on it.

Casting a spotlight on their recruitment plans for the UK and giving some clues as to what sort of staff Tiger Stores look for, their website says:

“As we are embarking on an ambitious expansion plan for the UK we have an ongoing need to recruit new staff. We are very fortunate with the team we have established so far but are looking for team members with a mixed level of experience from sales assistants to store managers.

We look for staff who are enthusiastic and passionate about retail. Ambition and common sense matched with creative thinking and bags of energy are the key qualities we look for.

Tiger offers a rewarding and fun place to work. We have a Scandinavian management style with a relaxed and professional attitude. Much effort is done to train, mentor and develop our teams.”
