Interserve is a FTSE 100 construction and support service company which employs around 80,000 people in full and part time roles all over the world. The firm enjoys a turnover of over £3 billion and annual operating income which sometimes exceeds £100 million.

Interserve is a firm with a long history, tracing its roots right back to 1884 when it started out life as a transport company on the River Thames called the London and Tilbury Lighterage Company Limited (LTLD). After a variety of name changes, two World Wars and an expansion of the business into dredging, construction and civil engineering, the company listed on the London Stock Exchange as Tilbury Contracting Group Limited in 1966, the year that England won the World Cup.

By the late 1990s, Tilbury had expanded to the Middle East and had moved into support services, maintenance and the facilities management businesses, finally changing their name to Interserve in 2001.

Nowadays, Interserve works in even more sectors and has operating divisions including Professional Services, Construction Services, Support Services and Investments and works on infrastructure projects for local and central governments, energy companies, health industries and many more clients. Over the years, Interserve, its predecessors and subsidiaries have worked on huge projects such as the London Eye, the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Murrayfield and Don Valley Stadiums, Spaghetti Junction and various sections on the biggest UK motorways.

Interserve’s headquarters are in Reading, Berkshire and their offices there are home to many different sorts of roles for young people looking to get into a flying career. The firm has bases in various other locations, both in the UK and abroad, and offers a mix of work placements, internships, industrial placements and other opportunities for undergraduates, graduates and apprentices.

Explaining the strategies behind their recruitment process for students, graduates and other young people, the company’s website offers this:

“Developing school leavers and early career employees is a constantly evolving challenge and one Interserve relishes. Interserve’s UK targets predict that we will hire double the number of apprentices compared with graduates. That’s not to say we are reducing our graduate opportunities. Our vision to double the number of graduate and apprenticeship opportunities in the next few years is on track. This year will see the first graduates joining our interior fit-out business Paragon as well as an increase in construction graduate numbers to meet the needs of our increasing project portfolio.”
