International Citizen Service (ICS) is a once-in-a-lifetime volunteering opportunity open to all 18 to 25-year-olds, funded by the UK government.
It gives you the chance to work side-by-side with local volunteers in developing countries, to make a meaningful contribution to fighting poverty, and to gain valuable skills that will stay with you long after the 10 -12 week placement is complete.
ICS has placements in 26 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America and is currently recruiting for placements departing between February and June 2015.
ICS volunteers don’t need any particular qualifications or experience, just the motivation to make a difference.
It doesn’t cost to take part in ICS; flights, accommodation, food, visas and training’s included. Volunteers are expected and supported to fundraise a minimum of £800 before their placement to demonstrate their commitment and to enable more young people to take part in the programme.
ICS is led by VSO in partnership with a hand-picked group of respected development organisations. They each offer structured support and training to help and guide you – before, during and after your overseas placement.
ICS also has placements specifically for young people interested in developing their business skills by supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses in developing countries.
Unemployment is a key challenge facing young people around the world, and tackling that challenge can boost economic growth in some of the places that need it most. To do this, ICS Entrepreneur teams young volunteers from the UK with local volunteers from developing countries, putting their skills and creativity into practice supporting emerging businesses.
This could involve using your skills to support a farmer to produce a business plan, help a carpenter to develop a new product, or assist a market seller to expand their business. The challenges are varied and exciting, and you can make a noticeable difference. Find out more about ICS Entrepreneur here.
